Our Future
September 13, 2012
Some of you may have heard some talk about the future of our farm....
Mike and I have run this farm for five years; we have learned a lot and have worked really hard. One of the biggest lessons learned was respect for all farmers because of the amount of work, energy and dedication that running a farm takes. We have always strived to do our very best and present the vegetables in their best and inherently beautiful state. We have been given the gift of witnessing all kinds of weather, the movement and activity of birds and animals on the farm. Seen the magic of seeds growing to big beautiful plants and had the disappointment of having them melted by blights, dried by drought or consumed by insects. We have loved living here in our house, on this beautiful piece of land, in this wonderful community/s, and have made very close lifetime friends.
We have decided, for a number of reasons, to make this season our last. One of the biggest reasons is not farm related. My Mom will be 85 on her next birthday; it takes 7 1/2 hours to get to where she lives and the farm schedule (7 months a year without a day off) make it impossible to see her enough. We are also finding 85 hour weeks of intense manual labor to be beating our bodies up, we also don't get to have any personal time during the farm season. Off season is hard work as well, the hours are just a little shorter... Both Mike and I have interests outside of farming; Michael writes, I do photography, paint and yoga, we both love to read and cook. There is no time for any of these pursuits in season. We will still have a garden...
We are both very passionate and involved in food issues, eating healthfully, not having chemicals or GMOs in what we eat, the politics of food. We have been and hope to continue to be Slowfood members. Hopefully this next chapter will delve us deeper into this aspect of food and eating
Thanks so very much for all you support! We really couldn't have done it without you!
